Rituals and routines bring some order to chaos and confusion, so a change of routine can be very difficult for them to cope with. Difficulties in awareness, social interactions, activities, and interests can include: difficulty understanding other people's feelings and emotions, isolated and unimaginative play, repetitive and obsessive behaviour, abnormal body movements (such as hand flapping or toe walking), rituals and routines, and sensory sensitivities to certain sounds, colours, tastes, smells and textures (such as bugs). In some cases, they may be non-verbal or involve abnormal patterns. They often have a hard time understanding the meaning and purpose of body language, spoken and written words, and may interpret words literally or not understand them at all. People with ASD experience difficulties with both verbal and non-verbal communication. ASD is considered a developmental disorder as the symptoms are commonly associated with early childhood. Rather than having separate diagnoses, autism is now diagnosed in terms of its severity, ranking 1-3, where 1 requires support, 2 requires substantial support, and 3 requires very substantial support. The previous subdivisions of autism, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) are now considered as autism spectrum disorders.
